    Hayden Lake 2007

Abi and i just got back from a fun-filled weekend in Hayden Lake Idaho at the annual Velin family get-together. all of Grandma and Grandpa's kids whose last names were Velin were there, as well as all their grandkids and great grandkids with the last name of Velin (and two Conleys for good measure). alas the lone daughter of the family and her clan of Mayo's had a vacation planned for next week and couldn't make it. but 30 of us had a lot of fun, food, sun and water. check out the pictures!

more reasons to hate & boycott Blockbuster

thanks to the glory of the web and the desire of ex-employees to create content and share it, i now give you a great article about "The Top 10 Lies Blockbuster Video Tells Their Customers

    a sample:

Blockbuster Online was created solely to steal Netflix’s online rental idea and drive them out of business: as such, if/when Netflix is bankrupted by Blockbuster Online’s Bauman-esque ripoff artistry, Blockbuster Online will raise its prices significantly, and probably get rid of the whole “free instore rental” thing. Thanks to the combination of No Late Fees and the Blockbuster Online free rentals, the BB Corporation is losing money – once their main source of competition is gone, they’ll do whatever necessary to get that cash back.

bottom line: avoid Blockbuster like the plague. instead join netflix. They are fantastic, easy to use, and they just lowered their prices. I watch a lot of movies from netflix (i'm currently on the 3 dvd's at a time plan for $16.99/month (this is the new, lower price)). last time i calculated it out my new releases cost me less than $1.50. Blockbuster charges between $4-5. Netflix also does free online streaming/downloading. it is an easy choice!

next gen creating next gen in my old stompin ground

North Dakota is about to "turn on" a very cool project--it will use wind power to create and store hydrogen for use as fuel.

"Natural gas is typically used to produce hydrogen, but the process creates emissions. Hill said the goal is to demonstrate that hydrogen can be produced — and stored — using pollution-free wind power."

there are less than 10 of these plants in the US, and the ND plant will work to fuel 3 pickups and one tractor.

it is a small step, but a step nonetheless!

Nick Hornsby is a genius (and a bit about Harry Potter)

i'm a reader. i love to read. when i get started, i voraciously devour it in just a few days. case in point...

it was super freaking hot in Seattle all of last week. it is never super freaking hot in Seattle, so no one has air conditioning. to escape one night, Abi and i spent the evening at Barnes and Noble--she did homework and i browsed and started reading one of 2 books i was going to buy. The book was A Long Way Down, by Nick Hornsby. he is they guy that wrote High Fidelity, About a Boy and Fever Pitch--all which have been made into movies. he is bloody brilliant! he is also british, hence my use of "bloody" to describe his brilliance. i finished the book in about 3 days.

the book is written in the first person from the perspective of 4 different people, an american late twenty-something rock-n-roll flunkie, a disgraced middle-aged british tv personality, an 18 year old british delinquent with issues, and a mother of a 19 year old son with severe mental disabilities. they all come together by chance as they try to jump off the top of a tall building in London. the book follows their journey back from the brink of the abyss. deperessing, startling, charming, witty, and freaking hilarious!

While in Jamaica i read his other novel (the one not made into a movie....yet) called How To Be Good. i finished the book in about 3 days.

This was another dramatic yet funny book about a Dr in England who decides she wants to divorce her husbad. he says "no" and she is stuck. he then has a massive "spiritual conversion" and is determined to "be good"--which means he wants to have his neighbors host runaway teens, he gives half of his kids' toys away, and every meal that is cooked is given away to the homeless. the story follows the mom/wife/doc as she struggles to follow these life changes and save herself and her marriage.

How to be Good was the funnier of the two, but both excellant reads and worth picking up or checking out at the library (shout out to the libraries for you Lindsay!).

in other movie/book news, we went and saw Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix yesterday. It was awesome, but i bet more so to those of us who read the books. Abi didn't like it as much as not much happens (true) and there wasn't much action or magic (also true). i haven't pre-ordered the last HP book yet, but i'm going to try to pick it up somewhere the first week it is out. i'm sure i'll be done with it in no time. :)

    i'm a big winner

our year-end championship poker tournement went down on Saturday. at least once a month we play a texas hold em game and track our stats towards a year end. i ended up in a tie for 4th place at the end of the year. Abi came in 3rd at the end of the year.

This standings gave us a slight advantage in starting chips over the tournement of 18 players. but everyone was within $3K of chips of the leader (if i remember correctly anyway).

after 9 hours of play, i won the second place money (essentially i lost the final hand in heads up). But, do to some rules established, i actually won the tournement!! the person who beat me went out in 16th place and then took over some one else's stack when they needed to leave the game. so, since i played every single hand, i guess i'm the winner.

i was also awarded (by vote of everyone at the tournement) the Most Improved Player of the Year award. i really did work on my game this year and it really showed. last year i never placed in the top 3 ($winning spots). this year i placed in the top 3 6 times, including the championship.

so in a couple of weeks i will be getting 2 different trophies with my name on them. yup, i rock. :)

    Microsoft makes amends

back in early May my xbox360 died on me. it was 18 days out of warranty and cost me $105 to get it fixed (this was a discount of the normal $140 they charge--i got it because i complained about being so close out of warranty, i did not get it because i work for Microsoft).  i ended up getting shipped a new console (they couldnt fix the old one) and a new 1 year warranty.

Today the Microsoft Xbox 360 team announced it was putting in retroactively a 3 year warranty. they will be rolling the program out worldwide and will be giving refunds out to people! i'll get my $105 back!

it is tough to tell if this is damage control from some recent reports or if it was just the right thing to do. i'd like to think they realize that this is a significant pain point for consumers and want to make the best product possible. the company (despite its "evil" reputation does really want to build good products for people to use). the company mission is "to enable people and businesses around the world to realize their full potential". working from the inside perspective, we do try very hard to infuse that vision in everything we do. you get a lot of flack and scrutiny when you are so proflic and most of the world uses your products.

this means increased costs for Microsoft, but they obviously have the cash. perhaps it will also give them a goal to try to fix the issues before they ship the next batch of consoles.

either way i have a working xbox360, and in about 10-12 weeks i should have another check from Microsoft. i wonder if they'll just add it to my direct deposit for my regular paycheck. :)

    you may be wondering

so you might have noticed the "popfly gadget" at the top of my page. yes it is a whack-a-mole game where you take a large mallet and bash pictures of Paris Hilton. ok, so not the coolest thing ever, but what is cool is the fact that i made the gadget myself. www.popfly.com is a cool new mashup site/toolbox Microsoft has in Alpha now and so i thought i'd play around with it.

basically a mashup is a combination of 2 different datasources--you can have your friends facebook profiles charted on a map of the world, you can search the internet for pictures of BMW and have them displayed in a rotating carousel, or you can search the internet for pictures of Paris Hilton to smack with a hammer. those are the 3 i've created so far--but i've only played with it for about 30 minutes.

what makes www.popfly.com cool is that anybody can do it. yes i work on websites for a living, but i'm no web developer. most mashups are written in javascript, which i have no clue how to read. so Microsoft Popfly is wicked sweet as it allows anybody to mess about and create stuff. there are forums for support and you can share your application so the broader community can see it. you can also work together and collaborate on cool projects and widgets.

very cool stuff! check it out.
